Overview
WOW: Women Offering Work
"Helping women to help themselves" is the motto of WOW, a company that trains women to become bookkeepers and breadwinners. Bookkeeping is a service required by more than 30 million small businesses in the US that can be done on a flexible schedule with the option to work from home. These services need to be local and uniformly performed.
Since 2004 more than 150 women have completed the WOW bookkeeping course. Most are currently working in the field earning 50 - 100% more than any job they had before. The best student from WOW's first class, a 29 year old mother of two, now owns and operates her own bookkeeping business. She has 186 clients and employs five graduates of the program. When she enrolled in the class in September of 2004 she was making $10 per hour.
With $50,000, WOW will open two training centers with three people and train 150 bookkeepers in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the first year.
