Overview
The Thai Town Marketplace is a social enterprise, business incubator, and multiethnic community market for East Hollywood, where 35% live below the poverty line. Through focus groups and surveys, Thai CDC identified the need for better access to healthier, locally-produced foods and quality entrepreneurial jobs as strategies to revitalize this area. The marketplace is comprised of a daily-operated indoor market and food court and weekly farmers' market, both located at a Metro subway station.
Deliverables:
- 18 start-up small businesses by local entrepreneurs
- Over 40 jobs for the local community
- 15 farmers' market growers at the Metro Plaza
- Cultural events
- Monthly health booth for free health consultation and information for healthy eating
- Educate and train vendors to accept food stamps and WIC coupons
- Health Zone that coordinates and promotes the efforts of the market and social service organizations, e.g. Family Source Center and Bicycle Kitchen
- LEED certification
