Overview
SOOTS seeks to support the South’s authentic blues tradition in a homegrown manner. SOOTS t-shirts have been designed by students & silk screened in a classroom. At our annual Fat Tuesday Film & Music Festival you enjoy homemade student prepared gumbos & live music. Then, the icing on our cake is our annual May Day Cake Bake, which offers the best local Southern kitchen-created desserts our students can conjure. These events finance SOOTS' Benefit Bluesfest - an event that showcases elderly Piedmont Bluesmen. In 2011 we would like to organize and promote a Bigger, Better Blues Revue - including legends John Dee Holeman, Boo Hanks, George Higgs, Lightnin' Wells & Big Ron Hunter. Better yet, we want to film the event professionally to preserve these treasures. Best of all, this grant will allow SOOTS to fund more mini grants to aging blues musicians who need help with medical, utility and grocery bills. Help us help to sustain these roots musicians.
