Overview

The health of Southeast Iowa residents ranks near the bottom in the state as reported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Childhood obesity is among the highest, yet we live in the breadbasket to the world. The epidemic of eating too much of the wrong foods is creating a generation disabled by their lifestyle choices.

The Seed-to-Table program will serve as a model for Iowa. We will invite schools to visit our demonstration programs which teachers can then implement in their own curriculum.

We have a good start: An edible permaculture, a 4100 square foot greenhouse utilized daily by K-6 graders, and a 7-12 grade curriculum that extends to sustainable living practices.

So what is missing? The Kitchen. The Refresh Everything grant will allow us to convert an existing multi-use building, adjacent to the greenhouse, to include a fully equipped kitchen and small dining area. Students of all ages will utilize it for theoretical and practical learning.
