Overview

In the face of a poor economy and in response to rising grocery costs, Cicero Christian Church dedicated a portion of our land for a free community garden to serve our neighborhood. Our inaugural year (2009) involved raising volunteer labor, supplies and funds to transform a grassy yard to a 2000 square feet disability-friendly strip garden and 1/2 acre sweet corn. We tapped into our on-site pond for free water. We recognize the following and seek to improve our serve in 2010 and beyond:
*garden is desired and needed, but marketing must broaden
*size should increased - 500 sq feet and 13 fruit trees added for 2010
*poor soil must be improved
*permanent storage shed is needed
*weather-resistant signage to identify and educate our end users
*volunteers have been generous with time and equipment, but garden needs tools for all to use
*partnering with the disability community and school is beneficial to all and we'll continue to seek partners
*financial support is needed

How will the 5K be Used?
