Overview
Science education in the United States has fallen behind the rest of the world and today's students are often unaware of career choices in scientific fields. Numerous studies show that technology is an effective tool to get teens interested in science and museums. We will collaborate with local educators and students to develop podcasts related to museum exhibits and other local sites of interest, with iPods available for checkout while at the Museum or podcasts available for download at home. Funding will also help with the development of associated educational programs such as science fairs and field trips to local sites related to museum exhibits. Creation of educational materials will be designed to show students real-world examples of modern science research and possible careers they can pursue. We hope these plans will help make the museum more relevant and accessible to teens in search of volunteer opportunities.
