Overview
Every year, nearly 4,000 children are reported abused or neglected in Shelby County. Despite the state's attempt to help, many such children become trapped in the court and child welfare maze and can spend their childhood moving from one temporary shelter to another. This is where Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) steps in. CASA volunteers speak up for the best interests of children in court. CASA of Memphis & Shelby Co. recruits, trains, and supervises these volunteers, who are appointed by a judge to recommend the best possible outcomes for the futures of abused and neglected children. Whether this means helping to make a connection with adoptive parents or safely reuniting the child with parents, the ultimate goal of the CASA volunteer is to help ensure every child can live in a safe, permanent home. They do so by investigating the child's situation and making recommendations to the court until that safe, permanent home is secured.
