Overview
The Hi-Five Food Pack Program serves chronically hungry elementary children by providing take home food packs of nutritious food. The packs are sent home on Friday so the children have nutritious food to eat on the weekend.
The teachers determine which children are suffering from chronic hunger and ask their caregivers to allow the children to participate. The food pack is discreetly placed in the child’s backpack during recess or other private times to help preserve the child’s self esteem.
The food packs are prepared by Food Bank volunteers and delivered to the schools. Each pack contains a variety of items such as beef stew or spaghetti (pop top can); shelf-stable milk; 100% juice box; breakfast bars; cereal; pudding cups.
The food packs are boxed at the Food Bank then delivered by the Food Bank to the elementary schools. Each food pack includes an age-appropriate book on healthy eating or healthy physical activities.
