Overview

My wife Janet runs a public library serving 7 municipalities across 120 square miles. Many residents may not feel connected to their library; patronage declines with distance from the library building. I want to try affecting this with a mascot that residents can arrange to have at events for free (festivals, parades, concerts, etc.) An inflatable costume makes this feasible; it offers comfort and easy maintenance compared to furry costumes, which can be hot and heavy. The wearer can be male, female, short, tall, perhaps as young as 10, and the character will look the same. The mascot is called HAT HAT because his head is a backwards ball cap and his design features the letters H-A-T for "Hollidaysburg Area Together," because HAT HAT will be created by and celebrate the cooperation vital for services such as libraries. His current costume is homemade. He was introduced to our area during October 2009, waving to traffic daily along with area kids (see YouTube link).

How will the 5K be Used?

Budget Notes: The costume quote comes from Signs & Shapes International, the leading manufacturer of inflatable mascot costumes. They outfit the famous Zooperstars characters, familiar to our area from appearances at Altoona Curve games (local minor league baseball).
