Overview
The EVERYONE UP project will provide an activity scholarship program for youth. On a recent survey by the Hastings Youth Activity Council, the top reason parents cited prohibiting their kids from participating in activities was cost. Over 50% of Hastings Public School students qualify for free/reduced lunches (HPS 2010). In addition the project will work to reach its goals above by creating improvements to facilities and spaces in our community including adding a t-ball field at the YMCA and updating playground equipment at local parks. And this program will help provide basic play equipment for community youth sports programs. South Central Nebraska is witness to the state’s highest rate of obesity among kids and adults (OANY, 2004 and SHDHD, 2005). We must provide opportunities to be active. We know being involved in these physical activities gives kids a drug-free, positive outlet that promotes their self-confidence and well-being.
