Overview
Starting in the summer of 2010, El Sistema USA will expand its network to include more music education centers, known as “núcleos,” that will target disadvantaged communities. These include Atlanta, Durham (NC), Juneau, Philadelphia, and Queens, NY. These programs will be run through community partnerships that will support the El Sistema vision of music as a vehicle of social change.
In 2009, El Sistema USA chose its first 10 Abreu Fellows, a group of accomplished young musicians and teachers who are committed to developing El Sistema in the U.S. Housed at the New England Conservatory, the Abreu Fellows are spending a year studying in Boston and Caracas, developing the tools they will need to start El Sistema programs in communities across the U.S. Along with the hundreds of advocates who have reached out in support, the Fellows will continue to work to make the El Sistema model sustainable in different cities with their different needs.
