Overview

Double Positive is a zero-waste approach to public art, where scraps from one project are used to create another amazing work of art.

Recently, I competed for a public art project, and won the opportunity to create a 70 foot-long aerial view of a river, laser cut from stainless steel. The process of laser cutting creates scrap metal, which would otherwise be recycled. I propose to utilize the scraps to create a second public art project in a separate location. The two projects will be visually and conceptually linked by the fact that one is created by the other.

Double Positive will beautify and add character to a public place. One option is to install the work on a parking garage, displaying Double Positive on a large blank concrete wall. Another option is to replace an ugly chain link fence with the artwork. Lastly, Double Positive will serve as an advocacy tool for implementing a public art program in Jackson, with an example of what contemporary pubic art looks like!

How will the 5K be Used?

Budget Notes: The budget will not cover materials, or laser cutting. It will fund the labor to collect, and re-assemble the thousands of scrap pieces from the laser cutting process. The resulting work will be installed professionally, and displayed for the next 40-50 years.
