Overview
The Charlie Lovely Cancer Research Grant will be used to help improve survival rates for adolescents and young adults (AYAs). More than 70,000 people between the ages of 14-39 are diagnosed with cancer each year, their survival rates are significantly lower than all other age groups and have not improved over the past decade. Currently, there is not much funding or recognition of AYAs and the unique genetic, biological and emotional differences in people of that age group fighting cancer, however, a correlation has been found in the survival rates of AYAs and participation in clinical trials. Currently, there are very few clinical trials for AYAs and often they can't participate in the trials that do exist. Clinical trials designed specifically for this age group and their unique needs could make a big difference on AYA survival rates. The Charlie Lovely Cancer Research Grant will be given to researchers working to develop clinical trials for adolescents and young adults.
