Overview

Every child deserves a loving, supportive family as a birthright. Unfortunately, gay and lesbian youth in care face rejection and are three times as likely as straight peers to live in group institutions. Homelessness, depression, and suicide rates for these youth are extremely high. "A Thousand Moms" educates and supports foster/adoptive parents to help them meet the developmental and emotional needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning youth. These needs cannot be met by the child welfare organizations charged with their care--outside of room, board, clothing, and supervision. We partner with schools, churches, and agencies along with parents-foster and adoptive-to educate on the needs of gay youth and prevent family breakups. We educate for tolerance.
