Overview

Students and staff at Andrew Cooke Magnet School have begun fundraising efforts to bring life to the aging greenhouse at the school, after it has stood vacant for more than a dozen years.

The green-thumbed students hope to begin utilizing the 1,200-square-foot greenhouse, which is located inside the school, for science lessons, and to grow plants of their own.

“We’d like to get kids to experience everything about the growing process, from germination to the end,” said Cooke science teacher, Mr. Todd Freer. “We want students to understand how vegetables grow, so they know vegetables just don’t show up at the grocery store.”

Earlier this year the space was cleared out, and efforts began to renovate the location. It won’t be easy, however. The building is in desperate need of a new roof, and it also needs a new heater, fan and watering timer. Cost estimates for a complete renovation come in around $20,000.
