Overview
Our request is to help restore the historic stone fish ladder in Damariscotta Mills, ME. This is a project that is critical to the health of river herring populations (also known as alewives) in the Gulf of Maine. River herring are important to the ecology of freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems and they serve as a critical food for eagles and osprey and many other species. River herring populations are in critically low abundance along the entire east coast of North America.
At present, some of the most deteriorated sections of the fish ladder still need repair. Current crumbling pools will be rebuilt to new design specifications.
Today, all funds received for harvested alewives are spent to maintain the fish ladder and harvesting area, the oldest and most productive in Maine.

| Budget Notes: Restoration of the upper middle section of ladder is estimated at $100,000. We have raised $45,000 and anticipate being able to raise another $8000 via our more traditional fund raising community events. Approximately 95% of raised funds have gone directly to the rebuilding of the ladder. | |
