Goals

  • Demonstrate a fun way to reuse broken surfboards
  • Shock people with the variety of trash found on beaches
  • Make a work of art elegant enough to demonstrate beauty from trash

Overview

My "Save a Board, Save a Beach" project will reuse broken surfboard as platforms for art.  The board art will be made of trash collected from local San Diego beaches or from the water near our shores.  I hope to inspire people in two different ways.  First, it will be shocking for viewers to see the horribly eclectic variety of trash found on our beautiful beaches.  Second, I will disprove the misconception that junk is useless.  That is, I want to reaffirm reuse as a powerful part of the three Rs!  By placing this art in a location near the beach and next to a trash can, I hope to encourage beach goers to throw their trash away!Deliverables - 3 Surfboards decorated with beach trash - A poster board explaining where each item on the surfboard originated - I would like to surfboards to find a permanent spot in my local community to help raise ocean-pollution awareness.  Of course, this will depend on me finding the proper location!

How will the 5K be Used?

Budget Notes: I already have the broken surfboards, so no need to include that in the budget! ;) Maybe I could even auction one of the art pieces off at an auction. Of course, the money raised would go to further increasing awareness!
