Overview
Real Food Farm's Mobile Market will make fresh food accessible to 27,500 people in East Baltimore who live in a “food desert.” A food desert is a neighborhood in which residents have little or no access to foods needed for a healthy diet. There is only one grocery store in the area, it has a limited selection of fresh produce, and many residents do not own a vehicle to get there. The Mobile Market will transport locally-grown vegetables into five East Baltimore neighborhoods, kind of like an ice cream truck only with potatoes and peppers instead of popsicles! As we drive down side streets and alleyways, we will share recipes and nutrition information. We will also accept food stamps and WIC cards. We will work closely with community organizations to build on their efforts to decrease the high rates of obesity and disease due to poor nutrition. The Mobile Market will become an established institution in East Baltimore!
