Overview

The Make Solar You! project will create a setting in which New Yorkers of diverse backgrounds, ages and skill levels can share in constructive, fun gadget-building experiences, and leave with concrete knowledge and a lasting fascination with solar technology, electronics and robotics. 5 gadget-building workshops will be hosted repeatedly overr a six month period at Solar One, a green energy education center located in Manhattan. Workshops will be distinguished from each other by complexity and skill reqirements. Participants will pick up and build on new skills during each workshop, from basic soldering to circuit board configuration. Participants can take a single workshop that matches their skill level, or advance from one workshop to the next to gain Gadget Master status. Gadget Masters can participate in a special workshop to develop their own or collaborate on group designs.

All instructional designs will be posted on the web for use and modification by anyone, anwhere.

Budget Notes: Workshop refreshments and final ceremony costs would not be covered by Refresh award.

$ 11,500 Staffing: instructors and facilitators
$ 1,000 Web page design and development
$ 500 Outreach and marketing
$ 1,500 Equipment (soldering irons, glue guns, wire cutters, etc.)
$ 4,000 Scholarship fund to defray costs for youth participants
